At Circuit, we generally work in a semi-async fashion. This means that the vast majority of our communication is written or recorded via something like **Loom.** Things that would usually require a 1-2 hour meeting in more traditional companies are handled in an async way over a slightly longer period.
The reason why we embrace this way of working is twofold:
Firstly, it allows people to be flexible with how they spend their working hours. That means you're generally free to spend your best hours of the day tackling your toughest problems and can save the more menial tasks for when you're winding down or getting started.
This flexibility to dynamically adjust your work to fit your own acute psychology has extremely positive effects on our mental and physical health and the quality and quantity that we can contribute during a week-long period.
Secondly, semi-async communication allows us to be flexible with our actual working hours.
Need to walk the dog, grab some shopping, hit the gym, or pick up the kids? That's perfectly fine to do if you have nothing specific scheduled for that time.
We believe the flexibility to work around your life results in the best outcome for yourselves and the company as a whole, and not being tied to the office all day allows that to happen.
We feel strongly that the standard 9-5, especially in a remote environment, is far from the best possible way to work. As such, we give (and expect) some flexibility when it comes to working hours, leaving employees mostly to figure out a schedule that works best for both themselves and Circuit but sometimes requiring a change to get something fixed quickly or a large project over the line.
You're free to figure out a schedule that works well for both Circuit and you. We're flexible around when you start, end, and how long your breaks are - providing it doesn’t affect your ability to do great work.
On a standard day, we encourage you to use up to 2 hours of flexibility (plus your lunch break) in the way that best suits you. For example:
